Thanks Terry for the great response. I agree with you, I think it can help in some circumstances but not as a rule in general.

Good Morning Fishbonz,

I do a lot of fishing on Lake Michigan for salmon and have some experience with color preference in this species. Red is the first color in the spectrum to disappear as the object goes deeper in the water. Red is only distinguishable in 10 feet of water or less. At water depth exceeding 10 ft. the red color ceases to exist.

Color plays a big part in my angling for salmon but the application of color depends on a lot of different factors.( Depth, type of day, amount of surface disturbance etc.)

I would have to say, in my humble opinion, red hooks attract fish in certain circumstances, but not as a general rule.

Thanks for putting up with my ramblings,

Terry (tforge)

I don't think it makes a difference. I think its just a matter of personal preference.

Reason I asked is I've used both for a few years and don't see any difference either way, though some anglers will swear by them.

Don't Know have to Try to use red hooks. I haven't fish with them yet but we will see if they catch more then the old black hook.

Do you believe red colored hooks improve your catch?
