Yesterday, the owners and operators of the San Diego Sport Fishing Fleet at the Mission Bay marina were all served with 30-day eviction notices. Apparently, the new operators of the Hyatt don't want any part of that sport fishing "paradise in "their" marina. Somehow I don't think getting evicted from the Mission Bay marina is compatible with the city of San Diego's general plan.
SAN DIEGO – The owner of a sportfishing charter boat in Mission Bay pleaded for the San Diego City Council's help Tuesday after he and four of his fellow captains were told to vacate their docks.
The Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa & Marina recently gave five owner-captains at Mission Bay Sportfishing eviction notices, telling them they must be out of the marina by Nov. 14.
Some of those captains have held a lease at Mission Bay Sportfishing, which used to be called Islandia Sportfishing, since 1968.
“They would like us off the property and (to) dissolve Mission Bay Sportfishing,” Gary Abbamonte, owner and operator of the 38-foot-long charter boat Alexis, told the council. “We are asking for your prompt and immediate attention on this.”
The City Council agreed last year to a sale and lease extension of the hotel, which sits on municipal land. The hotel, formerly the Hyatt Regency Islandia, has since undergone a renovation.
Salvatore D'Anna, whose family is involved in San Diego's sportfishing industry, testified that the city has “a duty to protect this resource.”
D'Anna said a trust that gave San Diego Mission Bay and its tidelands mandates that the city preserve navigation, commerce and fishing.
Councilman Kevin Faulconer, who represents the area, said he became aware of the issue last week and has asked to meet with the mayor's staff this afternoon to get more information.
The other charter fishing boats that operate out of Mission Bay Sportfishing are the Dolphin, owned and operated by Jason Coz; the Dolphin II, owned and operated by Greg Miser; the Dominator, owned and operated by Frank D'Anna; and the Chubasco II, owned and operated by Ernie Prieto.
