Shimano Curado CU200B Maintenance |

This article describes in detail the steps to disassemble and service you Shimano Curado 200B series reel. Keeping your reel clean and well maintained will ensure that the reel will perform properly when you need it most. The Curado is designed for both fresh and salt water. But heavy use in salt water requires more frequent maintenance. At a minimum, this service should be performed on an annual basis to ensure peak reel performance. Shimano parts referenced in the article can be ordered by calling Shimano directly at 1-877-577-0600.
List of tools that may be needed to service your Shimano Curado 200B:
1) Small Phillips screwdriver
2) Q-tips
3) Shimano oil part number BNT1445
4) Towel or rag
5) Shimano grease part number A-dra1/4 (¼ ounce size will do around 5-15 reels)
6) Schematics of the reel [ CU200B | CU201B ]
7) 10mm wrench or nut driver or the Shimano tool that came with the reel
8) Small flat head screwdriver
9) Long Phillips screwdriver (Size 1 or 0)
10) Toothbrush
11) Rubbing Alcohol
1) Lightly rinse reel in fresh water, a small spray bottle would be ideal. Be careful not to spray with too much pressure or it will push salt inside the reel.
2) Wipe down with a towel or rag after rinsing.
3) Remove the side plate opposite the handle and remove spool from frame (See fig 1)
4) Use a Q-tip with a little alcohol to remove any excess oil or dirt from the spool shaft and spool lip. (See figures 2 & 3) If the dirt/oil is not removed from the spool then you will see a considerable loss in free spool.
5) Remove any excess oil and dirt from the VBS brake weights. (Colored plastic weights on the spool) Replace brake weights if worn
6) Remove any excess oil or dirt from the brake case (See fig 4)
7) Apply a few drops of Shimano oil to a Q-tip and apply to the VBS weights
8) Apply one small drop of oil to the spool bearing or bushing
9) Clean the spool raceway on the frame with a Q-tip and alcohol. (See fig 5 & 6)
10) Apply 3 small drops of oil the worm gear. One to the center and one to each side of the gear.
11) Clean the line guide eyelet with a Q-tip and some alcohol
12) Remove handle nut lock plate (See fig 7)
13) Remove handle and drag star. Tip Use the drag star to remove the square nut (See fig 8)
14) Remove pressure washers and shims if applicable. Make sure to lay the parts in order to aid in reassembly. (See fig 9)
15) Remove all Phillips head screws holding the side plate to the frame of the reel.
16) Next remove the 2 springs on top of the yoke and pinion gear. (See fig 10)
17) Remove the main gear from the handle shaft. Remove clutch ratchet and drag washer. On right hand reels the flat side will face up. On left hand reels the curved side will face up. (See figures 11 & 12)
18) Use a tooth brush and some degreaser (Simple Green Crystal is recommended) to scrub excess grease and salt deposits from the frame.
19) Apply a light amount of Shimano grease to the white plastic idle gears part number A-dra1/4
20) Use the toothbrush to scrub the teeth of the main and pinion gears. Remove some cotton from one end of a Q-tip. Clean all excess oil/dirt from the center on the pinion gear. (See fig 13)
21) Apply Shimano grease to approximately ½ of the teeth of the main gear.
22) Using a flat head screwdriver lightly rub the surface of the drag washer. This will remove all the old drag grease and prep the surface for re-lubrication. (See figures 14 & 15) Rub a good amount of grease into the washer after it has been resurfaced. Should the washer be in bad shape then it will need to be replaced (soaked in oil or severely burned) BNT1212
23) Remove the drive shaft cover to gain access to the drive shaft and bearing. You will need a long, small Phillips head screwdriver to achieve this. You will see two small holes to allow the screwdriver to pass through. (See figures 16 & 17)
24) Remove the E-clip and washers. You will see one copper washer and one plastic shim. (See figures 18 & 19)
25) Remove the drive shaft and bearing and shim. Lubricate the bearing with one drop of Shimano oil. Clean the bearing pocket of debris/corrosion. If the bearing is corroded then it will need to be replaced (BNT0031). Tip When reinstalling the bearing and shim use the drive shaft to assist you. Place the bearing and shim on the drive shaft and reinstall as an assembly.
26) During reassembly make sure the yoke and pinion gear are installed correctly. (See fig 20)
27) Reassemble reel and check performance.
