Decoding Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Date Codes: The Ultimate Guide

Whether you are a collector dating a “Made in Sweden” classic or a mechanic trying to find the right schematic for a modern C3, the numbers stamped on the reel foot are your DNA map.

1. Where to Find Your Code

Flip your reel over. On the reel foot (the part that attaches to the rod), you will see a stamped number.

  • Vintage Reels: Typically a 6-digit number (e.g., 800500).

  • Transition Reels (80s-90s): Often a hyphenated 3-segment code (e.g., 84-2-86).

  • Modern Reels (Post-1997): A complex 4-segment code (e.g., 17 00 18 / 36).

2. The Modern SAP Era (1997–Present)

If your reel has a code that looks like 17 00 18 / 36, it follows the modern SAP inventory system. This is the most confusing system because it uses a specific “+10 Rule.”

The Modern Formula:

[Year of Design] — [Alteration No.] — [Year of Production] — [Produced at Week]

  • Year of Design: The year the model was first introduced.

    • The Math: Add 10 to the last digit. “07” = 1997, “17” = 2007, “27” = 2017.

  • Alteration No.: Crucial for parts! 00 is the original release. 01, 02, etc. mean a part was changed that is not interchangeable with the original.

  • Year of Production: The actual year your specific reel left the factory. Use the same +10 rule as above.

  • Produced at Week: Numbers 1–52. It resets every Monday.

Expert Case Study: A stamp of 17 01 19 / 05 means this is a model Designed in 2007, it is the First Revision (01), and it was Built in 2009 during the 5th week of the year.

3. The Vintage Era (Pre-1997)

For older Swedish-made Ambassadeurs, the system was simpler but requires a keen eye for the format.

The “Dash” Format (1980s–1990s)

Example: 84-2-86

  1. 84: Designed in 1984.

  2. 2: The 2nd revision of this model.

  3. 86: Manufactured in 1986.

The 6-Digit Format (1971–1980s)

Example: 760501

  • 76: Year of Manufacture (1976).

  • 05: Month of Manufacture (May).

  • 01: Production/Revision batch.

4. Pro-Repair Warnings: Why the “Alteration” Matters

When ordering parts from our Parts Shop, the Alteration/Revision number is the most important digit on the reel.

  1. Non-Interchangeable Parts: If your reel foot says “01” and you buy a part from an “00” schematic, it may look identical but be off by a fraction of a millimeter.

  2. The Drag Stack Trap: Abu frequently updated the drag washer materials (moving from felt to carbon) during revision changes. Check your revision number to ensure you get the correct drag kit.

5. How to Use This Data

  1. Identify your code style from the list above.

  2. Use the +10 Rule for modern reels or the YYMMDD rule for vintage.

  3. Find the matching Year and Revision in our Abu Garcia Schematic Archive.
