Unpacking the Quantum Surge Reels

For anglers exploring the diverse lineup of Quantum fishing reels, the Surge series represents a collection that offered both spinning and baitcasting options. While perhaps not always in the spotlight like some of Quantum’s flagship lines, the Surge reels provided functional platforms for various angling pursuits.

Evidence from schematics and parts listings indicates the Quantum Surge series included multiple spinning models, designated with “SU” prefixes such as the SU50F, SU60F, SU70F, and SU80F. These different size designations suggest a range intended to cover various fishing applications, from lighter freshwater techniques to potentially more robust scenarios requiring greater line capacity or drag capability. Key components identified in these spinning reel schematics include standard features like drag knob assemblies, spool assemblies, bail mechanisms, pinion and drive gears, and anti-reverse clutch bearings, which are critical for immediate hook sets.

Alongside the spinning variants, the Quantum Surge lineup also featured at least one baitcasting model, the SU670CX. This reel, as detailed in its schematics, was built with typical baitcaster architecture, including a palm-side cover, gear kit with a pinion and drive gear, a thumb bar for spool engagement, a worm shaft for line lay, and a star drag mechanism for adjusting tension.

Notably, for the Surge SU670CX baitcasting model, aftermarket Carbontex drag washers have been available. This is a point of interest for anglers who look to enhance their reel’s performance, as Carbontex washers are a popular upgrade known for providing smoother and more consistent drag pressure, especially under load.

While extensive marketing details or numerous in-depth reviews specifically focused on the Quantum Surge series as a whole are not as readily available as for some other Quantum families, the existence of detailed schematics and replacement parts points to a series that was part of Quantum’s offering, providing anglers with functional tools for their time on the water. Like many reels in their respective classes, the Surge models were designed around core principles of gear engagement, drag application, and line management to meet the fundamental needs of fishing.
