Daiwa Presso Reels: The Art of Finesse and Ultralight Angling

The Daiwa Presso series is a specialized line of fishing reels meticulously engineered for the discerning angler focused on ultralight and finesse fishing techniques. Renowned for their lightweight construction, refined performance, and features tailored for delicate presentations, Presso reels are a top choice for targeting species like trout, panfish, and other small game fish in streams, ponds, and “Area” fishing scenarios (a term often used for specialized trout fisheries).

While Daiwa also offers a line of Presso ultralight rods and accessories, the Presso reels stand out for their precision and dedication to the ultralight angling discipline.

Key Characteristics of Daiwa Presso Reels:

  • Ultralight Design: A primary focus of the Presso line is minimizing weight. This is often achieved through the use of advanced materials like Daiwa’s Zaion carbon composite for the body and rotor. Models like the ’21 Presso LT boast weights under 150g (e.g., LT1000S-P at 145g), making them exceptionally comfortable for long sessions and enhancing sensitivity.
  • LT Concept (Light & Tough): Many modern Presso reels incorporate Daiwa’s LT Concept, which aims to make reels smaller and lighter while simultaneously increasing strength and durability, particularly in the gearing.
  • Monocoque (MQ) Body: Select Presso models feature Daiwa’s innovative Monocoque body. This single-piece frame construction eliminates the need for traditional side plates, allowing for a larger, more powerful main gear to be housed within a more compact and sealed body. This design enhances rigidity and durability.
  • Specialized Gearing: Presso reels often utilize a low gear ratio (e.g., 4.9:1). This provides a slower, more controlled retrieve, which is often preferred for finesse presentations and working small lures effectively. They are equipped with advanced gear systems like Tough Digigear or Extra Super Duralumin MC Tough Digigear for smooth, precise, and durable operation.
  • Finesse-Tuned Drag System (ATD): The ATD (Automatic Tournament Drag) system is common in Presso reels. This drag is designed to be exceptionally smooth, especially at startup, to protect very light lines from breaking when fighting spirited fish. Some models feature a spool 2BB specification for enhanced drag performance.
  • Shallow Spool Design (SS Spool): Presso reels typically come with Super Shallow (SS) spools, designed to hold the optimal amount of thin diameter lines (like light fluorocarbon or PE braid) used in finesse fishing, preventing the need for excessive backing and reducing overall spool weight.
  • Oil-Spec Ball Bearings: To maximize sensitivity and provide an incredibly smooth retrieve, some Presso models use oil-lubricated ball bearings in the gear section, as opposed to grease-filled bearings. This contributes to a “buttery smooth rotation.”
  • High Grip I-Shape Finesse Knob: Handle knobs are designed for precise control and comfort, often featuring an I-shape for delicate manipulation. Handle arms may also be shorter (e.g., 40mm) to complement the reel’s compact and finesse-oriented nature.
  • LC-ABS Spool (Long Cast ABS): This spool design helps to reduce line friction and improve casting distance, even with lightweight lures.
  • Air-Bail and Air Rotor: These Daiwa technologies contribute to reduced weight and improved rotational balance and line management.

Notable Presso Reel Models:

  • Daiwa ’21 Presso LT: This series (e.g., LT1000S-P, LT2000SS-P) is a prime example of a modern Presso reel, featuring a Zaion Monocoque body, LT concept, low gear ratio, ATD drag, and an extremely light weight (around 145-150g). It typically comes with a high bearing count (e.g., 12+1).
  • Daiwa Presso Baitcaster (Vintage/Specialty): Historically, there was also a Daiwa Presso baitcasting reel, based on the Pixy platform. This was a specialized ultralight baitcaster designed for trout, featuring a unique MagForce braking system (not V or Z) and a very light overall weight. This is more of a collector’s item or JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) specialty reel today.

Target Applications:

Daiwa Presso reels are specifically designed for:

  • Area Trout Fishing: A highly specialized form of trout fishing in managed ponds or lakes, often using micro spoons and lures.
  • Stream and River Finesse Fishing: Ideal for presenting small baits and lures to trout, grayling, and other stream-dwelling species.
  • Ultralight Panfish Angling: Perfect for targeting crappie, perch, bluegill, and other panfish with micro jigs and light tackle.
  • Any situation requiring extreme sensitivity, light line protection, and precise control with ultralight lures.

In Summary:

Daiwa Presso reels are not all-around spinning reels; they are highly specialized tools for the ultralight and finesse angler. They prioritize extreme lightweight design, smooth and precise operation, and drag systems capable of protecting the lightest of lines. If your angling passion lies in the delicate art of finesse fishing, particularly for trout and other smaller species, the Daiwa Presso series offers some of the most refined and purpose-built reels available.
